What have you done for me lately?

last30.com graphs how players are performing recently. What have you done for me lately that is statistically relevant?

Knowing someone went 2 for 4 is nice but it is not enough of a sample size to draw any conclusions.

Appropriate recent sample sizes for hitting are last30 at bats, and last 30 games. For pitchers the appropriate sample size is the last 30 innings.

Talking about someone's season bating average in the middle of the season is like saying the average price of IBM stock over the last 3 months is $94. You would never look at a stock that way. You graph it daily.

With players, we have to use a moving average to clear out the daily noise.

When someone says "He's hot"...we prefer "His last30 at bats slugging is 900"...900 is a number you can compare with other players and over time. 900 is hot! last 30 at bats is a statistically significant number. It is enough data to be important.

Just "He's hot" is not.
